No, there is no free market anywhere. Yes, the legal system is corrupt, the visa system is corrupt, international travel has been ruined since 2001, and there is much to consider. I shall not say that I am in any way against anyone with skills getting a job wherever they are welcome to live and work. Indeed, my mom taught English as a foreign language to all the foreigners, and they were from a vast array of places. We often had swimming pool parties in the Summer session time and people were talking Danish, German, Spanish, Thai, Tagalog, French, Vietnamese, Mandarin, something that might have been a Sichuan dialect, Portuguese, Japanese, and other languages at various times. Doesn't confront me none. All of them are neighbours as described in the parable.
That said, all corporations are a vexation to the free marketeer. The idea of a corporation is to have the state create an entity that is legally protected to prevent its directors from being sued personally for actions they take when they are pretending to be the corporation. A corporation is a legal fiction and that liability limit is the whole point of the exercise. Many people have suffered because the bums who create huge corporations always have gooferment subsidies, special benefits, big lobbying teams in the District of Corruption, buy the politicians day in and day out, buy the bureau rats of the key bureaus and agencies, and do whatever they want. They are the opposite of "great wealth comes with great responsibilities" and they are bums, at best, parasites at worst, and frequently they are predators in their spare time. Which, because of how they have rigged and gamed the system, is pretty much all the time.
So I don't care about corporations, I don't agree that they are even slightly about free markets, and I disagree with all aspects of what is called government at every level. Whenever anyone complains about anything, I always say, "I blame the government." And in the last ten years, I have gotten zero push back on that reply. I get a lot more vocal agreement in the last 5 years since the Wuhan flu.
So, y'all don't trust the Zuck, and I think that's wise. Y'all don't trust the mElon and I think that's wise. But do you really think that Substack isn't also an algorithm ghetto? And how would you go about demonstrating whether it was or was not? I'm not much concerned about the answer because I refuse to consent to Stripe's terms of service, and I don't want to charge for L5 News. But I do think it is an interesting exercise. I get a sense of some people and posts being shadow banned. I had a friend whose screen name "Bilbo's B##tch" was vaguely obscene, who was definitely full on banned from this platform. So I am persistently uncertain about this idea that is making the rounds that Substack is a completely free speech platform. I'm also unconcerned because since the moderators of the USEnet made it difficult to talk about certain topics on sci.space.policy, I have gotten used to taking my ideas elsewhere.
I have faith in God that the people who should see the things I write will see them. Beyond that, I don't think there is any reason to trust that any platform is anything but what its owner operators want it to be, and for whom they are willing to allow it to be that thing. And I have no sense of the people who own Substack as to whether they are sensible chaps or not.
The reason people of California is because of the weather. Near perfect. Where else can you surf in the ocean and ski in the mountains all in one day? At least in the United States.
